Frequently Asked Questions
What is a search engine?
Internet search engines are special sites on the Web that are designed to help people find information stored on other sites. There are differences in the ways various search engines work, but they all perform three basic tasks:
-> They search the Internet — or select pieces of the Internet — based on important words.
-> They keep an index of the words they find, and where they find them.
-> They allow users to look for words or combinations of words found in that index.
How does search engines work?
A search engine operates, in the following order:
* Web crawling
How long will it take for my website to appear on Google.
This is a question we get asked a lot. To be honest, there is no definite time-scale we can predict for your website to appear on a search engine as Google seems to index websites anywhere between one week or three months
Why can’t my website be found when I do a search on Google?
You must at least register your site with search engines and directories.
Why is my browser displaying outdated web pages?
If your browser displays information which is outdated or doesn’t include your most recent changes, it may be storing local copies of the website pages in its cache. One reason for doing this is that it can help to improve download times. However caching is best suited for pages that do not change very often. Clearing your browser’s cache may help to resolve this type of problem by holding in your CTRL and F5 keys. You can also open your Web browser and click on Tools and select Internet Options and click on the General tab. Click on the Delete Files button in the Temporary Internet files section and then OK.
What is the difference between hits and unique visitors?
A hit to a website is when something on the website has to load. If a web page has 6 images on it and a person visit that page, it will receive 6 hits because of every image that needs to load.
More accurate statistic to describe performance of your website is the number of visitors or unique visitors. Visitors are the number of people coming to your website. Unique visitors measure how many people visited over a set period of time.
So you can see that a “hit” is not a real accurate measure. The “visitor” count is much more accurate to indicate the popularity of a website.
Why not install a page counter on my website?
“Page counters do nothing except make you look like an amateur, mess with your design, and tell people information about your site you probably don`t want them to know! If you want to know how many people are hitting your site, just ask your host for server stats. Any host worth it`s salt should be able to provide you with detailed stats that make page counters look stupid.”Stefan MischookKillerSites.com.
Why can’t I update my own website?
Once you have your website up and running you may be wondering how you can make changes to it yourself, without having to pay a web designer. You can only do updates on your website if you purchase website editing software or if your website is complete with a Content Manage System. You must know what you are doing before you try to edit your site! The thing that many people don’t understand is that the tools you use to edit your website are less important than the skills to use them.
